09.29.99 – On the road to Atlanta

We’re flying to Atlanta in a few hours, but I’m writing a quick entry anyway. I will sleep on the plane. I just got this email:
=-=-=-=-
I’m glad I was prepared and ordered L&GF because Bri’s mom went to the local Media Play and bought 40 of them. Now the entire Hartford area is waiting for the next shipment. By the way, awesome job. I love it!

It’s true. I didn’t get my act together to send any discs home to CT. Now the entire state is unable to find the new album. But the Rosenworcel’s are stocked.
Thanks to everyone that showed up at Tower Records today…. B

09.17.99 – Trax, Charlottesville VA

Two-thirty AM after our Trax show in Virginia. Charlottesville hotels were booked solid because it’s UVA Homecoming Weekend so we’re getting out of town in search of a hotel.
This afternoon in soundcheck a girl walked into the club holding a fiddle and said she was there to play with Guster. At that point I realized I’d emailed a girl a while back and casually said she should bring her violin to a show. I’d completely forgotten about it and she took a 6 hour bus ride to play with us today… her name was Sruti. Anyway, her violin pick-up didn’t work so we had to mike the fiddle and though it never gets loud enough that way it seemed to get a rise out of the crowd tonight during the three tunes she played with us… Mona Lisa, Rok-it-ship, and Window. The crowd was unreal tonight… our 12th time playing Trax and our first official sell-out. As we’re wont to do when there’s a big audience we unleashed Ryan into the crowd with his 50 foot mike cord to surf around while belting out Sweet Caroline. Just like a real Stadium Rock Show.

Tomorrow we’re playing some high school dance at an all boys prep high school in Virginia where no one’s heard of us. Then we get a week off to gear up for our cd-release week where we’re playing like 12 out of 13 nights or something and my hands will be too swollen to send in road diary entries. Cheers.

09.15.99 – University of Maine, Orono ME

Backstage at a theater on campus at the University of Maine in Orono ME. Damn it, Pasty, they’re supposed to have the dressing room stocked with Fresh Samantha’s BEFORE we start soundcheck!! Ummm, our road diary and our world tour are now officially underway (though we still need to buy a digital camera). We left yesterday and crashed at a motel in Freeport last night. On the way we stopped at our favorite dinner buffet, OCB (Old Country Buffet) on Route 84 just north of Hartford. That chain has kept this band alive on more than one occasion. 8 bucks and you’re stuffed. And the carrot cake — the hidden gem of OCB. For the vegetarian perspective on mass-buffet dining, consult the one non-carnivore in our crew, James. You might recognize him as the guy on stage who catches the shaker when Adam tosses it over his head in the middle of “I Spy.”
I don’t know why we’re playing in a 1600-seat theater in the middle of Maine. No one up here has any idea who we are, though Adam did an interview with some top 40 station this afternoon (right after they played “I Want It That Way”) and he convinced them to play his favorite track on our new disc, #7 — “All The Way Up To Heaven,” which is probably the last song on the disc that station would have been willing to play. Anyway, don’t know what to expect tonight but as it’s day 4 or so of our ridiculous fall tour, my hands are pretty regular-looking. That will change. Bri

09.24.99 – Meadows Music Center, Hartford CT

Today we played a radio festival thing. These events are pretty much the same — you show up and play about 30 minutes with no soundcheck to a sparsely-attended shed where the crowd is sitting down. Then a band like The Verve Pipe goes on after you and lights up the crowd with smash hits like The Freshman.

Ah, but the fun part is the radio interview you do after the set. I said “ass” live on the air, and Ryan hugged Dee Snider (of “Twisted Sister” fame) during the interview. I told Dee I had a t-shirt with his head on the back screaming “I Wanna Rock!” while chewing on the bone of some animal {true story}. Ryan told the dj that we were touring with Sevendust, Korn, and Godsmack all fall {lies}.
Jersey-bound…
